BIKING
AT IT'S BEST

WHAT WE DO

01

BIKE DETAILING

Your bike is a collection of moving parts. When these parts come into contact with mud, grime and debris, wear and tear is inevitable. This speeds up the deterioration of your bike’s components. Your first line of defense against breakdowns is proper bike hygiene.

04

BIKE BUFFING

Cycle Center provides a full service repair department, which is staffed with highly qualified experienced mechanics whose passion is bikes. We’re bike repair experts with the experience, knowledge & training to do the job right the first time.

03

HEADLIGHT RESTORATION

Though retailers are in the business of making bikes look great, the problems with headlight fogging are more than cosmetic — they also affect safety.

04

PAINT CORRECTION

aint correction can involve either the hand or machine application of varying grades of cleanser, polish or compound. The majority of work is usually done with rotary machine polishers to get the best level of correction.

05

Wheelbuilding

The wheelwright must ensure that the wheel is true in two ways: lateral (sideways wobble) and radial (roundness/hop). The wheel also needs to be properly dished if applicable (the left and right sides of the rear wheel differ, the drive-side spokes requiring higher tension). Spokes should have no residual twist (windup) from tightening the nipples. The spokes may be "stress relieved", i.e. subjected to a greater tension during building than they are ever likely to encounter in use - usually by squeezing pairs of spokes together very hard. This 'yields' the spokes (and/or the hub) into a permanent shape where they bend around the hub flanges and each other.

RECOMMENDED SERVICES

The skills involved in maintaining racing bicycles and other specialized bicycles of course go beyond the basics outlined in New York's "occupational brief." Well-known schools offering advanced training for bicycle mechanics include the United Bicycle Institute of Ashland, Oregon and Barnett Bicycle Institute of Colorado Springs, and Appalachian Bicycle Institute of Asheville, North Carolina. The Park Tool Co., a well-known maker of bicycle mechanic's tools, has an outreach training program called the Park Tool School which is made available at many local bike shops, taught by local bike shop personnel with the assistance of training materials and manuals from Park Tool.
